How to properly advertise your skills in your resume

In the search for a job in which you can exploit and develop your potential as a good virtual assistant, you may not know how to ideally project yourself as a professional, or how to properly advertise the skills that make you a great candidate for a job.

There are always many applications for the same job and standing out may be difficult but not impossible. You don't need a 5 page resume to impress a potential employer. Here are a few simple things you can do to improve your resume and the way you advertise yourself:

  1. Have multiple resumes: especially if your career path has many job options, this can be very helpful. A resume doesn't have to be one size fits all. Think of the different fields in which you have worked and the job you are applying for and highlight the abilities that are best valued in the position of your interest. As a virtual assistant for example, if you're applying for an administrative virtual assistant job, try to emphasize your experience in that field when you are mentioning your experience and skills. On the other hand, if you are applying to a more specialized virtual assistant job, focus on your previous experience with those specialized tasks.

  1. Be concise: a resume is not the place to extend long sentences about your experience and qualifications. Try to mention everything that is important briefly and clearly, in the interview you will get the opportunity to elaborate. Just make sure you mention everything that you consider important.

  2. Write answers to commonly asked questions: include things like a short summary of your previous work experience and the way in which you want to portray yourself as a professional. You will still have to answer these questions in the interview, but this will show that you have clear ideas about yourself and your career path. For this, you can consider the idea of having multiple resumes, so you can answer questions that different employers will be more interested in.

  3. Value accessibility more than aesthetics: using an exotic font and an out of the box layout for your resume may be tempting but it’s not the best idea. You should value more that your resume is easy to read and understand, especially if you are applying for a job in a formal business environment. Sometimes more is less and depending on your career path and the qualifications you want to transmit, a more sober design could be what’s best for you.

  4. Use a simple and organized layout: a resume is just a small glance at your aptitudes, in this case it is good to remember that actions speak louder than words. If your resume is impeccable and organized, your potential employer can perceive that you have those qualities instead of just reading or hearing about them and they may be more interested in your profile.
